“Running Up That Hill” is now a Halloween song due to its usage in Stranger Things (which is also why the song’s general popularity rose significantly in recent years).
The connection to "Stranger Things" does add a spooky vibe! Even though I knew that's why it ultimately became a hit again, my Gen X brain still thinks of it in its original 1985 context.
Our town has a downtown trick-or-treating event called Monsters on Main Street (it's been a tradition for nearly three decades), and thousands of kids go door-to-door at businesses on the afternoon of Halloween. We play the music for it on one of our radio stations. Our playlist includes some of the ones on your list, but also songs like "Devil In A Blue Dress," "Haunted House," "Witch Queen of New Orleans," "Witch Doctor," "I'm Your Boogie Man," "Purple People Eater," "Boris the Spider," "I Want Candy," "Time Warp," and many others.
Great songs! Since I was evaluating the songs that are biggest on Spotify, the younger audience that is most partial to streaming might not have top of mind awareness of some of these classics.
Thanks for this. A couple worth including are "Time Warp" from the Rocky Horror Picture Show and "Haunted House" by Jumpin' Gene Simmons. The latter was based on a hilarious comedy bit by now-forgotten comedian "Brother" Dave Gardner who could honestly be called the godfather of Blue Collar comedians like Bill Engvall and Jeff Foxworthy. A few more obscure ones to include: "Dinner with Drac" by Zacherele, Screamin' Ball at Dracula Hall by the Duponts, and Monster's Holiday by Buck Owens.
Great songs, Tony! Since this article is tracking the songs Spotify users play on Halloween, some of these classics such as "Haunted House" by Jumpin' Gene Simmons might lack awareness among the 45 and under set that still dominates streaming usage. "Time Warp" actually does make the list at #47.
This made my morning. :) Not on the list, but the best song to play as the trick or treaters arrive is Sara's theme leading into "Come Little Children" from "Hocus Pocus." The little kids find it sweet while the parents get appropriately scared.
